Word Chain

Each word has to start where the last one ended. Keep the chain alive for 60 seconds.

About Word Chain

Word Chain gives you a starter word and 60 seconds. Every word you type has to begin with the final letter of the word before it. STORM ends in M, so MAPLE is legal, and MAPLE ends in E, so EAGLE is legal after that. Words need at least four letters. Break the link and the word is rejected; the clock does not stop while you think.

Longer words are worth more, and consecutive accepted words build a streak bonus, so the scoring pushes you toward ambitious words rather than safe three-letter filler. Skipping is allowed but costs five seconds off the clock.

The starter word comes from the same daily seed for every player, which makes scores directly comparable. Words are validated against the public-domain ENABLE dictionary.

Scoring is per letter, multiplied by your streak. Each accepted word pays ten points a letter, and every consecutive word without a skip raises the multiplier a step, up to three times. Seconds left on the clock when the run ends pay a small bonus too, which is why a chain that never stalls beats one built from a few long, slow words. The starter word is chosen so it has plenty of continuations — you will never be handed a dead end on the first move.

How to win at Word Chain

Steer toward friendly endings
Words ending in E, R, S, T and N leave you thousands of options. Words ending in Y, X or Z leave you almost none. When two words score about the same, play the one that hands you an easier next letter.
Keep a stock answer for every hard letter
Decide now what you will type after a word ending in Y, U or V — YELLOW, UNDER, VERY. Having one rehearsed answer per dead-end letter is worth more than a large vocabulary you have to search under pressure.
Long words pay twice
A longer word scores more on its own and keeps the streak intact, and the streak multiplier compounds. Two eight-letter words usually beat five four-letter words in the same span of clock.
Skip early, never late
A skip costs five seconds. That is cheap at 50 seconds remaining and ruinous at eight, so make the call to bail while the clock can still absorb it.

Word Chain questions

How long is a round of Word Chain?
Sixty seconds. The timer starts when the first word appears and skipping removes five seconds from it.
What makes a word legal?
It must start with the last letter of the previous accepted word and it must appear in the ENABLE dictionary. Proper nouns are not accepted.
Can I reuse a word?
No. Each word in a chain has to be new for that run.
Does the starter word change every day?
Yes. It is drawn from that day’s seed, which is the same for every player.
How short can a word be in Word Chain?
Four letters. Three-letter words are rejected even when they fit the chain, so a plan built on short filler does not work here.
